MENTORING STUDENTS SHARE THEIR POETRY

Mentor Foundation USA is dedicated to the idea that if you equip young people with the tools and give them the room to speak, they will! We are advocates for the use of creative expression to share thoughts and feelings and we work with our students to provide opportunities for them to take to the mic and speak out.

Mentor Foundation USA is dedicated to the idea that if you equip young people with the tools and give them the room to speak, they will! We are advocates for the use of creative expression to share thoughts and feelings and we work with our students to provide opportunities for them to take to the mic and speak out.

Part of our Mentoring in Schools program is to provide unique experiences in which our Mentors and Menteeā€™s can bond. We made a field trip to the legendary Bus Boys and Poets here in Washington D.C. for a day of food, fun and poetry. As always our students blew us all away with their words, their poetry and their courage to share that all with their mentors and their peers.

As our students took to the stage, one after the other, their words resonated inside the minds of the adult Mentors in the group. It is rare that young people express themselves so clearly and with such conviction. Mentor Foundation USA believes that if we actually just stop and listen our young people can tell us exactly what is going on. These trips to Bus Boys and Poets as well as our use of slam poetry for prevention in our Shattering the Myths youth rallies is a huge testament to the level of knowledge, courage and determination of our students.
